Welwyn 5th played against Chesham 2nd last Saturday. Chesham 2nd could only field eleven players and therefore forfeited the game which gave Welwyn 5th a 25 - 0 win. In the spirit of rugby Welwyn 5th lent Chesham some players so that a game could be played. Welwyn 5th lost the game 22 - 33 as Chesham 2nd had a few good impact players and a few good Welwyn 5th players, namely Patrick Traynor who made a few good breaks and managed to score a try for them, against his own side. Welwyn 5th try scorers were Jason Hartslief, Tim Ford with two tries and Mark Kemp who also had one conversion. The game was well contested and all the new players had shown a vast improvement but still have a lot to learn. Next week's game is against Amersham & Chiltern 4th away.

Welwyn 5th played against Fullerians 4th in a well contested game at home. Both teams played a hard game with a good sprit. With a strong wind to their backs Fullerians 4th were leading 19 - 0 in the first half. In the second half Welwyn 5th fought back with two trys, one by Andrew Avenell converted by Jason Hartslief and a second by Neil Freeman in only his 3rd game of rugby. Fullerians 4th only managed to score one more converted try. The final score was 12 - 26 to Fullerians 4th. The man of the match for Welwyn 5th was Stuart Giddens who played another outstanding game. Next week Welwyn 5th play Chesham 2nd at home.

The Welwyn 5th played Verulamians 3rd at home. The Welwyn 5th put on a very brave performance against Verulamians 3rd who had young, experienced set of backs who dominated open play. The Welwyn forwards had a frustrating game as there were only two contested scrums as one of the prop forwards from Verulamians got injured in the scrum which Welwyn had driven back off their ball. Even though Welwyn lost 83-0 the score did not reflect the determination of all the Welwyn players including eight of newly recruited players. Man of the match went to Graham Carr playing both outside centre and scrum half in a tough game. Welwyn 5th's next game will be against Fullerians 4th away on the 3rd October.

Welwyn 5th team was host to Hitchin 4th team in the first merit table 7 game of the season. Right from the start it was clear that Hitchin had a stronger well drilled side which broke through the Welwyn backs on several occasions. The Welwyn pack played a hard game up front managing on occasion to push Hitchin off their ball in the scrum. Welwyn went in 0-65 down at half time but despite this showed amazing spirit in the second half as Hitchin only managed a further 20 points, the game was eventually called of 5 minutes before the end due to a potential neck injury, final score 0-85. Welwyn 5th fielded several novice players as a result of good summer recruitment one of which was Richard Wade, who got the man of the match award in his first competitive game for an amazing break against the dominant Hitchin back line. Welwyn 5's now look forward to next week's game against Old Millhillians away, which they hope will be more of an even contest and produce there first win of the season.
