Welwyn 3rd vs Cheshunt

Both sides with everything to play for this was always going to be a tight match. The nerves showed early on with some knock ons and missed tackles, but Welwyn took the lead from a line out and drive to score in the corner, a well struck conversion from Jamesy settled the nerves. However Cheshunt threatened the welwyn line and should have scored but the winger knocked on. Only for the ref to award a penalty try minutes later for holding on by Welwyn. It was a penalty but a penalty try? So early and no former warnings or offences delighted the away supporters but baffled the home side. then this was quickly followed by a missed tackle in the centres by Welwyn with some good support play by Cheshunt resulted in a unconverted try. Lesser sides may have crumbled but the Welwyn men stood firm. How they held on to their discipline when the opposition winger lied through his teeth, stating the ball went straight out from a punishing kick was a true demonstration of the spirit.

So after a half time chat asking for everything that was left in the tank, Welwyn had to battle up the slope for the second week. Has anyone told Dan how important it is to win the toss so it's us charging down the hill when we are tired?

We Battled, we built, only for the last pass not to go to hands or a knock on and we had to start all over again. Just when the clock was against us and time running out, Wiggy crashed over we three defenders trying to stop him from grounding the ball. Unfortunately the conversion bounced off the left upright. 12 all.

Then the final whistle. It was clear to all on the pitch from both sides that the draw was enough for Welwyn to pip Cheshunt at the post in the chase for league honours.

Man of the Match, more like men of the match. It could quite easily have been Ritchie Dodd, but it actually goes to the Bench of Big Allan Smith, Neil Afford and Harry Sears. This was one of those games that failing injury the starting 15 was the finishing 15. This makes selection a bit easier as they will all start next week in the cup final against Ely.
