Last season, Wimborne was the hot property in girls rugby. National cup finalists and the best team in the South of England. They knocked Warriors out of the national cup in the semi final stage 7-5. A ding-dong re-match in the National 10s saw Warriors triumph 12-0 but this fixture was always the juiciest on the Warriors calendar!
The long drive down to Wimborne was full of trepidation. Wimborne has a formidable reputation. On a clear crisp afternoon both sides warmed up eyeing each other, nervously, knowing this was going to be a tough encounter.
Both sides were missing key players through injuries but it was Warriors who flew out of the traps and roared into a swift 17-0 lead with 2 great tries from Skipper Hannah Gallagher and a conversion from Geri Thomas. Nerves were calmed in the Welwyn camp but Wimborne now came charging back at the maroon hoops and no quarter was given as both packs clashed like bulls at every breakdown. Pressure told and Wimborne scored. 17-5. A quick tactical chat from coach Chris Gallagher worked the oracle! Tries from Tia Arberry & Springbok Frankie Dawson, both converted by Thomas made the half time score 5-31.
After their half time team talk, Wimborne pounded Welwyn backwards and were rewarded with an early try but Warriors now upped their game and another try for Arberry, a great sweeping run from Alex Robertson and 2 more for skipper Gallagher saw Warriors finish 10-50 winners! There were a lot of bruises on both sides afterwards and 'man of the Match' went to every single one of the Warriors! Coach Chris Gallagher was over the moon! 'Wimborne is the biggest girls side in the Southern half of the Country, they're up there with Worcester as being the best. Our girls today were immense! The forwards kept winning us ball and going in as hard as the opposition, what a win!'
Wimborne visit Welwyn in April for a league fixture. They will be out for revenge, no doubt of that, so a cracking encounter can be expected!
