It has already been a great season for Welwyn Warriors U18s as far as County rugby is concerned, with 16 Warriors being named in the County squad. Last week, County Coach, Clive Cramphorn named his Captain & Vice-captain. No surprise then that both are Warriors! As well as being Warriors Captain, Hannah Gallagher now steps up to Captain the County and Clive's choice for Vice Captain and 'Pack Leader' is Hannah Marques. Marques is the longest serving player at Welwyn and is really excited about taking on the support role to Gallagher. 'Clive wanted someone in the pack to support H.G. and I'm really excited about the chance this gives me. The competition at Welwyn is huge with 3 girls in the TDG but as they're all backs and Clive wanted someone 'up front', he's given me the chance to show what I can do and I'm really looking forward to it!.
Herts got off to a pretty good start yesterday, finishing runners-up to Hampshire in The Ealing Tournament. Herts were sluggish in their first match and lost 21-0 to Hampshire but then beat hosts Middlesex 48-0 with tries from Gallagher (2), Sophie Tyler (2), Frankie Dawson (2), Megan Williams & Alex Robertson. Next East Midlands were beaten 14-0 with tries from Robertson & Gallagher and finally Hampshire 'B' were beaten 10-0 Williams & Gallagher getting the tries. Gallagher also had a good day with the boot scoring 5 conversions with Geri Thomas notching the other.
Coach Clive Cramphorn wasn't too disappointed. 'We really didn't start against Hampshire in the first match, we dithered too much and were punished. After that things picked up and I was very impressed with Megan Williams, Alex Robertson, Geri Thomas and Hannah Gallagher, the way they inter passed and supported each other. Some great play there from all of them'. We have 2 more tournaments before Christmas and I expect us to improve!'
It rounded off a pretty good week for Williams too, who has been the target of interest from the Welsh RFU. With a Welsh Grandfather Williams is qualified for Wales and the Welsh are keen that she should trial with them when she turns 17.
